When veteran Canadian writer-broadcaster Alex Barris died, he unknowingly left his granddaughter, Toronto jazz vocalist Whitney Ross-Barris, a veritable treasure trove of music - a collection of long-forgotten sheet music and 78s from the 1940s that he wrote and performed. When Whitney came to produce her debut album "Everybody's Here," she couldn't wait to record some of her favourites from his catalogue; sweet, authentic and clever songs which have scarcely, if ever been heard. Though the album was partially recorded in Toronto with her jazz sextet, Whitney completed work on it as a duo with her pianist and co-producer Mark Kieswetter, in New York City's historic Nola Recording Studios. There, she recorded her late grandfather's songs in the very same room where he had recorded them, 66 years before her. As Whitney explains, "Everybody's Here" gets it's title from the thrilling experience of recording at Nola. "Mark sat down at Erroll Garner's old Steinway and as we laid down the first track of our session there, we both became aware of an extraordinary energy in the space. I was strangely speechless. Mark said, 'Yeah... Feels like everybody's here.' It seemed all the musicians, singers and songwriters I've adored over the years, many of whom had inspired this album, were there in the studio listening, their music suspended in the air around us like an electric mist." "Everybody's Here" is an eclectic album in it's content and sound, united by a band of tremendously talented Toronto jazz musicians including Mark Kieswetter (piano), Ross MacIntyre (bass), Morgan Childs (drums), Nathan Hiltz (guitar), Bobby Hsu (tenor sax) and Jake Wilkinson (trumpet.) Each song chosen is a personal landmark in Whitney's evolution as a singer - with songs by her late grandfather, Alex Barris and his co-writer Milt Carman, songs by Tom Waits, David Clayton Thomas, Leonard Bernstein and even some of her own compositions. Each recording is a celebration of those songs and songwriters that have brought her to this exciting and creative time in her life and career. "I'm so thrilled to have had the chance to make this album and to collaborate with these remarkable local musicians. But more than that, I'm humbled and so grateful for the music that my Papou has given me. Beyond it's incredible value to me as his granddaughter and as a singer, I hope that the world really enjoys listening to his songs as much as I have enjoyed singing and recording them."
