In his first and only self-directed lead performance, John Cassavetes portrays a dissolute novelist immersing himself in his current subject-the seedy lives of the local prostitutes. His existence is paralleled with that of his long-unseen sister (Gena Rowlands), whose kindly and giving nature hasn't spared her the anguish of a bitter separation from her husband (Seymour Cassel).
