1 % HANGOUT BIOGRAPHY the beginning: The artist known as 1% Hangout started out just like any other music loving fan: Listening to radio, going to clubs, buying the music, and just having fun. His musical influences include Sean Paul, Busta Rhymes, Bob Marley, KRS-ONE, Public Enemy, and a host of other Hip-hop artists. But as time went by, the artist began trying to make music for himself. The single most important event that led to this rude awakening was his move from the New York metropolitan area to Washington State. All of a sudden, the music was gone! What follows now is the total transformation of the Nigerian born, artist from a music fan to a complete self-contained artist. The art of song writing: 1% Hangout decided to go back to college in 1992 after four years hiatus. He now wanted to become an accountant. But what he didn't know was that he would also emerge as a songwriter, artist, DJ, producer, and CEO at the end of his college work. Here's how it all happened: In 1991, the artist joined a songwriter's organization called The Los Angeles Songwriters' Showcase (LASS) where he learned the craft of song writing for two years while pursuing his college degree. He then went out and bought himself a little keyboard, a drum machine, and a mini recording console. He used this little apparatus to come up with his first demos which where pre-productions used to go into a recording studio to cut real demos. To test these demos, the artist submitted them to music industry professionals at #### LASS who provided much needed critiques that enabled 1% Hangout to develop his song writing skills. At one of the annual conventions of LASS, the artist met a recording industry professional by the name of Judy Ross, at that time an A&R Manager at Epic Records in Santa Monica, who is now the Director of A&R at Epic. She immediately become a close friend of the artist and has guided his career from a distance. In the breakneck competitive environment that is the music business, it is often difficult, if not impossible, to find such a mentor relationship develop. In fact, Judy was the only A&R representative that returned calls. That not only served as an inspiration but it also provided the artist with a 'never give up' attitude. This attitude has served his song writing skill and professional development well. By 1993, the artist began performing his recordings publicly at talent shows and other music oriented shows around Spokane, WA. He also taught himself how to Deejay. At this point, the artist released his first commercial recordings, sold them at area music stores, and gave away as promotional materials to trade publications, other DJ's, and music reviewers. The reviews rolled in and they were positive. This further reinforced the artist's commitment to his craft as he pursed his college degree. By this time, the artist had become a member of Broadcast Music Incorporated (BMI), a performance rights organization, as both a songwriter and publisher through his Hangout Music (BMI). The professional affiliation exposed the artist to the business side of the music, which was something he could relate to and there was no stopping now. The artist felt like he was destined to be in the music business when he met the recording artist KRS-ONE, who came to his University on a lecture circuit. KRS-ONE gave 1% Hangout his autograph and the name of an A&R rep. At Jive Records in New York by the name of Ann Carli. #### Another meeting that took place at the University was when Mater P came in with his West Coast Bad Boys. 1% Hangout served as the DJ for the show that night. The record company: In 1995, 1% Hangout released the commercial single 'Rude Awakening' on his newly formed label Hangout Recordings. It was pressed on 12' and sent out to top deejays all over the country and released on the Internet. The Internet was then an emerging technology much like it still is today and it was unprecedented for an artist to quickly embrace this new medium. That notwithstanding, 1% Hangout embarked on a freedom run on the Internet. He had heard of a company in California that created web sites for musicians and provided order fulfillment, so he decided to give it a try. That company was known as the Internet Underground Music Archive (IUMA). 1% Hangout quickly emerged as one of the leading artists on IUMA and 'Rude Awakening' became the most downloaded title. By the summer of 1995, 1% Hangout transferred to the University of Washington in Seattle, WA to further his college goals and professional aspirations. Seattle was just the setting he needed to grow. The music scene was at that time one of the hottest in the country and thing couldn't be better. The exposure on the Internet led to various offers from record company executives including a company by the name of J-bird records, whose business model relied on the Internet, but the time was not right yet. He was determined to graduate from college with his accounting degree before committing to any offers. In 1996, 1% Hangout graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle with a BA in Business Administration (Accounting). He then set out to market the catalog of songs that he had accumulated. #### The first thing he did was to incorporate his company. He formed Hangout Corporation, brought in a partner on December 02, 1996 and assumed the role of President,CEO, and CFO of the corporation. 1 % Hangout says 'I have seen myself evolve from a music fan to a completely devoted and committed, artist, songwriter, and producer.' His music is an invigorating blend of pure Hip-hop and dancehall reggae which the critics and fans have come to love and appreciate. The reviews: 'There are signs of underground reggae life in the Pacific Northwest with groups like 1 % Hangout.' * Billboard Magazine April, 1995 'A dedicated and hardworking artist.' --The Flavor Magazine, Seattle WA 'This is the real thing boys and girls.' * Discourse Magazine Spokane, WA 'Runner up, band of the week contest.' * Internet Underground Music Archive (IUMA), 1996.
